The primary airport serving La Unión Department and eastern El Salvador is El Jagüey Airfield (MSET), inaugurated in 2025. It accommodates piston aircraft, turboprops, and very light jets. Helicopters can also land at numerous locations throughout the region, including helipads in La Unión and El Cuco. Construction of the nearby Aeropuerto del Pacífico is underway, with the airport expected to open in 2028.
It depends. Under a decree issued by El Salvador's Civil Aviation Authority in April 2026, aircraft registered in certain Central American countries may fly directly to El Jagüey Airfield (MSET), provided they depart from an international airport. This allows direct arrivals from Managua, Guatemala City, and the Honduran cities of San Pedro Sula, Tegucigalpa, Roatán, and La Ceiba.
Aircraft registered outside the region - for example, those with a U.S. N-registration - must first clear customs and immigration at one of San Salvador's two international airports before continuing to El Jagüey.
The most affordable way to reach El Jagüey in La Unión Department is by Piper Dakota (up to three passengers) departing from Ilopango Airport in San Salvador. The 35-minute flight costs approximately USD 2,220, or about USD 740 per person when the aircraft is fully occupied.
For larger groups, we recommend a Cessna 421. The flight takes just 20 minutes and costs approximately USD 2,900 for the entire aircraft - less than USD 600 per person with five passengers on board. Overnight trips can be arranged with either aircraft.
International arrivals are also available. From Guatemala City, a Cessna Grand Caravan accommodates up to 12 passengers, reaching El Jagüey in approximately 70 minutes. Charter prices start at around USD 6,300.
Arrive in style with a private helicopter transfer from San Salvador to El Jagüey. A Bell JetRanger charter starts at approximately USD 2,900, with departures available from Salamanca Helipad. The flight takes around 70 minutes and accommodates up to four passengers. Other departure points include Millennium Tower, Ilopango Airport, and El Salvador International Airport (SAL).
For a faster and more luxurious experience, we recommend Bell 222, which completes the journey in approximately 40 minutes. Departing from Ilopango Airport, this twin-engine helicopter accommodates six-to-seven passengers, with charter prices starting at USD 3,650.
Direct helicopter charters from Guatemala City are also popular among our clients. The flight takes approximately 1 hour 50 minutes and costs between USD 4,600 and USD 6,400, depending on the aircraft. Options include the Bell JetRanger (up to four passengers), the Bell LongRanger (up to six passengers), and the twin-engine Bell 222 (pricey).

Saiba maisEl Jagüey is the gateway to the El Tamarindo coast, Conchagua Volcano, and the Gulf of Fonseca, a region known for pristine beaches, sport fishing, and top-notch hikes. Roads are easy to navigate by car. We can arrange a private chauffeur in El Jagüey or recommend car rental in La Unión. The local economy is driven by fishing, tourism, specialized agriculture, and port activity.
Flapper is El Salvador's leading provider of luxury private air travel, serving clients in El Jagüey and the La Unión region since the opening of El Jagüey Airfield (MSET) in early 2025. We offer seamless access to a local fleet of 17 aircraft, complemented by a global network of long-range private jets connecting El Jagüey with destinations across Central America and around the world.

One of El Salvador's four primary airports, El Jagüey Airfield serves the entire eastern department of La Unión, providing convenient access to the El Tamarindo coast, the city of La Unión, Conchagua Volcano, and the Gulf of Fonseca. Its paved runway accommodates the most popular turboprop and piston aircraft, including the Cessna Grand Caravan, Cessna 402B, and Beechcraft King Air. Following a brief customs stop in San Salvador, smaller private jets such as the Embraer Phenom 100 and Cessna Citation M2 can also operate in El Jagüey. Helicopter transfers are equally popular, with landing options available on local beaches and at the La Unión helipad.

Our clients go to eastern El Salvador for a weekend combining adventure and barefoot luxury. Begin with a morning hike to the summit of Conchagua Volcano, rewarded with sweeping views over the Gulf of Fonseca and its volcanic islands. Spend the remainder of your stay unwinding at Hotel Casa del Golfo, an intimate oceanfront retreat overlooking the bay. Enhance your itinerary with a visit to the tranquil Playa Las Tunas, a private fishing charter in the Gulf of Fonseca, or a guided scuba diving excursion to explore the region's volcanic underwater landscapes before returning by helicopter or private aircraft.
