Located 3,700 km off the west coast of Chile is Easter Island. Inhabited by approximately ten thousand people, it is known for its giant statues, Moai and volcanic landscapes. There is no other means of transport to get there other than planes. Due to the few flights available, the air taxi to the province is a good option for travel, in addition to being customized according to the needs of visitors.
What to do on Easter Island
Easter Island is known for the giant Moai scattered across its expanse. They are statues carved in stone, built in worship of ancestors. For many, the existence of the “big minds” is unknown. But it doesn’t stop there, the island of volcanic origin also offers other attractions, such as beaches, volcanoes, caves, walks with beautiful landscapes, restaurants and shows.
Hanga Roa is the base of the place and where restaurants, shops, local residents, hotels and other services are concentrated. Among the unmissable tours we can mention, the sunrise at Ahu Tongariki, Rano Raraku, the moai factory, Orongo – where the bird-man ritual took place – walk on the slopes of the Rano Kau volcano and the traditional Tahai sunset. If the temperatures are high, we suggest going to Anakena to enjoy a beautiful beach full of moia.
Airport Available on Easter Island
Mataveri International Airport (SCIP/IPC) is the only one on the island, operated by the Directorate General of Civil Aeronautics of Chile. It was built during World War II by the United States, as part of a military base to protect the west coast of South America. Currently, the airport is mainly used for tourist and military purposes, being the main port of entry and exit locally. Due to the length of its runway, operations in large aircraft are allowed. Its passenger terminal is small, but it offers some facilities, such as snack bars and souvenir shops.
